Hanun took over the throne of Ammon after the death of his father, Nahash. King David sent his servants with condolences to Hanun for the loss of his father. But Hanun was led to believe David was sending spies to Ammon, to explore the city, and to overthrow it. Hanun then seized David's servants, shaved off half their beards, and cut away the lower halves of their garments, and then sent them away in shame. When David heard this, he declared war on the Ammorites, and defeated them.[1]

The name Hanun means "favored."
