Judaism is the religion of the Jewish population, during and after captivity in Persia. Compared to other contemporary religions, Judaism carried on the belief in a one true God, named Yahweh and was monotheistic unlike polytheism. Prior to the development of Judaism, the ethnic group of God's "chosen people" were the Hebrews who lived in Israel, Samaria and the split Judah. While the Nation of Israel as Samaria eventually was conquered and consolidated into the Assyrian Empire, Judah retained some of its independence while under the Babylonian and Persian Empires.
