Matthew 5:3 “‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’”

What does it mean to be “poor in spirit”? Being poor in spirit is an attitude we can have. Those who are poor in spirit feel as if they don’t own anything; what they do have they believe was given to them by God and belongs to God.[1] Being poor spiritually is to be humble[2], which we are commanded to be.[3] They recognize their inability to save themselves. This humility acknowledges God’s ownership over everything.

The beatitudes have a pattern. Each one is certain stage in a person’s walk with God. In this first stage, the person realizes his emptiness and inability to save himself. He is humble before God. They are considered blessed because they are going to be a “co-owner” of the kingdom of heaven, looking ahead to a future stage.

If you are already saved, that means you have already made it to this point in life. But don’t stop there, continue on in your walk with God. Study the Bible, pray without ceasing, and be a witness to those who are yet to be saved. Perhaps they will see their lack and become poor in spirit and come to a place of reconciliation with God.
